San Clemente Hires New Police Chief

The San Clemente Police Services division of the Orange County Sheriff's Department will replace the recently promoted Capt. Paul D'Auria with Lt. John Coppock.

The following is a press release from the city of San Clemente announcing that Lt. John Coppock will be the new chief of San Clemente Police Services:

City Manager George Scarborough appointed Lt. John Coppock to the position of Chief of Police Services for the City of San Clemente effective March 23, 2012.

Lt. Coppock is a familiar face to San Clemente, having served for 7 years with the San Clemente Police Department prior to the department’s merger with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in 1993.

Lt. Coppock is a 26-year veteran of law enforcement and has risen through the ranks as a result of his aptitude and handling of complex, demanding assignments. He attained his current rank of lieutenant in April 2011.

His major career highlights include criminal street gang enforcement; narcotics investigations and arrests; secondary commander of SWAT activities; responsibility for 3,000 high risk inmates as watch commander at Theo Lacy Facility; covert surveillance and undercover work; administrator of Homeland Security grants; and, supervision and administrative leadership involving the review of use of force incidents and investigations of alleged divisional personnel misconduct.

“After a competitive search, I am confident that we selected the right person for the position,” said City Manager George Scarborough. “Lt. Coppock reflects the quality of person we need in this position of leadership. His career background and proven record of collaboration with other agencies is critical to maintaining our effective efforts to deter criminal gang and drug activities. I am certain he will continue this great work and serve our residents with the utmost commitment.”

Lt. Coppock’s association with San Clemente goes beyond his work as a police officer and deputy sheriff. He called San Clemente home for 22 years, growing up here and graduating from San Clemente High School.

“My interest in serving as Police Chief in San Clemente goes beyond just another assignment,” said Lt. Coppock. “I have a sincere interest in the city’s existence and future and look forward to sustaining the safety and well-being of the community.”

Outgoing Chief Paul D’Auria affirmed the city’s hiring decision stating, “I am happy with the city's appointment of John Coppock. With his prior experience in San Clemente, along with his solid credentials, the city will maintain great leadership and continue to receive quality law enforcement services.”

Mayor Jim Evert concluded, “San Clemente will be in good hands with Lt. Coppock. After enduring a rigorous selection process, which involved a very impressive list of candidates with outstanding credentials, we deemed Lt. Coppock the best fit for San Clemente. I am 100% confident that our residents will feel the same."

Welcome! I would like to see a crack-down on the car break-in's around the beachside of the 5. Littering, and smoking on the beach. 3 problems that need more attention here in SC.
