San Clemente May Institute Sports Hall of Fame

The City Council is set to vote on a provision to honor famous athletes from the city with bronze plaques or tile mosaic. The project is the brainchild of Mayor Jim Evert.

One wall of the pool pump house at Vista Hermosa Sports Park will be dedicated to the accomplishments of local San Clemente athletes if the San Clemente City Council votes to approve the item Tuesday.

The brainchild of Mayor Jim Evert, the Sports Hall of Fame will include accomplished professional athletes who either grew up in San Clemente and took part in its recreation programs or lived in town while active in professional sports.

Evert said he conceived of the project when at a city employee dinner, Sue Enquist, an assistant coach to the U.S. Olympics Women's Softball Team and national champion UCLA player who grew up in San Clemente, came to speak.

"Enquist’s journey through UCLA is full of championships and accolades. She is an All-American, Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Hall of Fame Inductee and has been a part of 11 National Championships," according to her website.

Evert said she grew up in the parks system, playing in Little League and on the boys' team in high school because there was no girls' softball team at the time.

"I'm saying to myself, 'I've never heard of her, and how many others are there in town like her?'" Evert said.

The Beaches, Parks and Recreation Foundation will oversee the selection of inductees, who will be commemorated with bronze or tile mosaic plaques at the new park.

Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Council Chambers, 100 Ave. Presidio.
