Smith Wins Citizen of the Year

The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce awarded their local achievement awards and swore in new officers Thursday night at the Talega Golf Club.

City, county, state and federal officials--as well as the San Clemente business community--lauded Courtney Faye Smith Thursday for her volunteerism, scholarship and instrumental role in spearheading efforts to build .

The San Clemente High School freshman received the Citizen of the Year award at the annual awards banquet.

Courtney's SandCastle, a playground fully accessible to the disabled and located at the new The Courtney's SandCastle organization is still trying to raise money for the final phase of the building.

Also honored at the banquet:

  • Educator of the Year: John Davey
  • Business of the Year: CR&R Environmental Services
  • Volunteer of the Year: Beth Apodaca
  • Outstanding Lifetime Achievement: Michael Kaupp
  • Ambassador of the Year: Kelly Finney

Col. Nick Marano, commanding officer of Camp Pendleton, was also honored for his service; he retires from that position in April.
