Where's San Clemente's Best Bakery or Doughnut Shop?

Patch users over the next two weeks will determine the best pastries in town.

There's nothing quite like the sweet taste of a warm, freshly glazed doughnut. For that matter, there's nothing quite like the smell of fresh-baked bread or the taste of sweet filling in a danish.

That's why, in the same vein as , San Clemente Patch is holding a contest to find the best bakery in town.

Many of our counterpart Patch sites in Orange County are holding contests for the best cupcake, but it seems the cupcake fad that's swept the nation has missed San Clemente.

But we've still got plenty of good, old-fashioned pastry-and-coffee shops. A cupcake contest would hardly be appropriate here in this south Orange County doughnut mecca.

Here's some of our favorite places, but we want to hear from you:

And we can't forget the 500-pound bakery gorillas in the room: , and

Sure, they're not necessarily quaint, but there's got to be a reason why they're so successful, right?

Nominate your favorite before Sunday at 5 p.m., and we'll include it in our poll. We'll start the voting on Monday at 9 a.m. Leave your favorite spot in the comments.

Because this poll is not scientific, it is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined by the editor, based on poll results, comments and reviews on Patch Places.

The offerings from Surfin' Donuts and the Grill at Surfin' Donuts are light years beyond any of the other purveyors of deep-fried cholesterol bomblets available in SC. The feathery light interior dough is encased in a thin, crispy outer layer that results in an exquisite finished product, nothing short of an art form. Their apple fritters possess a crunchy outer glazed surface and are generously laced with apples and cinnamon. The only other outlet for the comparable monocular pastry, Dana Point Donuts, has closed and so I recommend Surfin' Donuts to my friends in alta San Clemente who are willing to drive a few miles south.

My mouth is watering right now from your comment. The Grill at Surfin' Donuts also makes stellar huevos rancheros, in my opinion. Haven't found better in town.

This poll is for the best 'bakery', not breakfast place right? I could list loads of great places in S.C. for breakfast like huevos rancheros but since we're supposed to be voting for a 'bakery'or 'donut shop', I suggest you add "The Bagel Shack" to the list. No donuts here but the fresh baked bagels are fantastic.
