$6.5 Mil Needed to Modernize Lobo Elementary, Architect Says

Overall, Capistrano Unified is looking at $822 million worth of construction needs across its 55-school district. This is Clarence Lobo Elementary School's share.

To bring Clarence Lobo Elementary School up to modern-day standards would take $6.5 million, according to a Capistrano Unified School District architect.

Of that figure, $3 million would be spent replacing half of the schools portable classrooms with permanent buildings. Another $1 million would be spent addressing repairs and maintenance items at the San Clemente campuse the district has put off in recent years, such as floor covering, paving and the heating/ventilation system.

In 2009, the district commissioned a study of all the facility needs throughout its 55 campuses. The report was recently updated for 2013 pricing. The district is facing $822 million worth of needs and only has about $44 million on hand to address them.

The latest numbers also include $774,000 to buy state-of-the-art technology for students.

Among the issues at Lobo is firefighter access. While firefighters do have access to the campus’s buildings, there’s not enough space for a fire truck to pull out.
