Architect Sees $9.5 Mil in Construction Needs at Truman Benedict

Districtwide, it would cost $822 million to modernize all of Capistrano Unified's 55 campuses. Here's Truman Benedict Elementary's portion.

To bring Truman Benedict Elementary up to modern-day standards would cost $9.5 million, according to a Capistrano Unified School District architect.

Written in 2009, the architect’s report was recently updated for 2013 pricing. The district is facing $822 million worth of needs and only has about $44 million on hand to address them.

At Truman Benedict, $3.5 million of the $9.5 million would be spent on replacing half of the school’s portable classrooms. Almost another $1.6 million would be spent addressing routine repairs the district deferred over the last few years, including paint, phone systems, heating and roofing.

The 2013 numbers also include $558,000 to purchase new technology for students at the San Clemente-based campus.

Below is an easier-to-read legend for the photo above. Because the campus is shared with Bernice Ayer Middle School, both campuses’ needs are listed. New construction, which originally included replacing all the portables, is in peach, remodels in yellow.
