San Clemente’s Carla McAlister set a new course record in the 17th Annual Surf City USA Marathon in Huntington Beach Feb. 3.
McAlister, 39, finished the race in 2:56:28, beating the previous record set by runner Nadia Noorzia in 2006 by 51 seconds.
At first, McAlister said she wasn't sure if she could finish the race because she ran the Carlsbad Marathon Jan. 27, but her persistence kept her swiftly moving toward the finish line.
"I knew what the record was, and thought maybe I could get it, especially towards the end of the race," McAlister said.
After the race, the reigning champion treated herself to Red Robin's endless sweet potato fries and attended a Super Bowl party.
For fun, McAlister enjoys running the San Clemente beach trail with her family, where she trained for four months before the race.
She praised the Surf City Marathon.
"It's a really beautiful course," she said.
