Football: La Costa Canyon 16, San Clemente 13

Defense plays well enough to win, but the Tritons can't get the play it needs on offense.

Already shaken by the death of former player Nick Pasquale two weeks ago, the adversity faced by San Clemente grows and grows. The Tritons will likely go the rest of the season without quarterback Sam Darnold following his foot injury in last week’s loss to Dana Hills. Still, the Tritons were a play away from winning on Friday.

Key Stats: LCC quarterback Jake Mann completed three passes for 58 yards, and rushed 16 for 141 yards, including a 47-yard score.

Pivotal Moment: San Clemente was trailing, 16-10, and needed something from its offense. Loren Applegate, making his first start at quarterback, was stopped at the 1-yard line on fourth-and-goal from the 2.

Notes: Applegate completed seven of 14 passes for 103 yards. … With Darnold out of the lineup, San Clemente’s offense struggled. It accounted for two field goals, of 31 and 21 yards, by Blake Gonzalez. … San Clemente’s only touchdown came on Tanner Wright’s 25-yard fumble return. … Wright also had an interception. … Next week San Clemente plays host to Newport Harbor (1-2), which is coming off its first loss in seven years to Corona del Mar.
