Football: San Clemente 59, Long Beach Jordan 6

The Tritons had no problem on either side of the ball in their home opener.

Two teams projected to finish fifth in their respective leagues showed there's absolutely no comparison between the South Coast League and the Moore League, which includes Long Beach Poly. Friday night at San Clemente, the host Tritons dominated Long Beach Jordan. Next week, the Tritons take on the team projected to finish third—and receive an automatic qualifying berth—in the Moore League.

Key Stats: Vlad Dzhabiyev ran 80 yards for three touchdowns, of 25, 5 and 3 yards.

Pivotal Moment: Holding a 14-0 lead following Sam Darnold’s 17-yard run, Collin Zines returned a fumble 18 yards for a touchdown 12 seconds later. Down 21 points with 3:52 left in the first quarter, Jordan was history.

Notes:  San Clemente led after the first quarter, 28-0. … Jordan’s only score came with six seconds remaining on a 48-yard run by DeOliver Walker. … The Triton defense allowed only 127 yards, 67 rushing. Of the 127 yards, 120 came in the second half. … San Clemente quarterback Sam Darnold had more yards rushing (92) than passing (54). Darnold passed five yards to Jason Wright midway through the second quarter for a 35-0 lead. … In addition to Zines’ fumble return for a score, Liam Buhl recovered a fumble in the end zone midway through the third quarter for a 45-0 lead. … Jordan replaced L.A. West Adams on the schedule; San Clemente beat West Adams last year, 56-0. … Next up for San Clemente is a home game against another Moore League opponent, Long Beach Cabrillo (0-1), a 20-15 loser to Norwalk.
