San Clemente Hiking and Biking Tips for Labor Day Weekend

The city of San Clemente has four major trail systems that welcome hikers, bicyclists and pets.

If you're staying in town this weekend and you've already been to the beach a ton this summer, you may be looking for something else to occupy you during the long weekend.

Luckily, San Clemente offers miles of trails along the beaches, canyons and ridgelines in town.

Attached is a PDF map of these trail systems, complete with difficulty descriptions, elevation graphs and connections to regional and state park trails.

The four major trail systems are the Rancho San Clemente Ridgeline Trail, the Forster Ranch Ridgeline Trail, the Prima Deshecha Regional Trail and the Christianitos Regional Trail.

This is not to mention the San Clemente Beach Trail, which has entrances at North Beach and the San Clemente Pier, as well as from several coastal neighborhoods.

A few rules to keep in mind, pulled from the city website:

  • Clean up after your dogs; the Beach Trail has dispensers filled with disposable plastic bags for this purpose.
  • Don't trespass on the railroad track. Not only is it unsafe, but you can also be fined.
  • Walk your bikes where indicated. This includes the Mariposa Bridge on the Beach Trail, as well as the asphalt area at the pier entrance.
  • When passing pedestrians on your bike, call out, "On your left!" to avoid collisions.
  • No horses are allowed on the city-maintained trails, though they are typically allowed on regional ones.
