San Clemente Prepares for 'Greatest Show on Surf'

The San Clemente Ocean Festival, now in its 37th year, will host the public for food, music and water sports of all kinds.

The city of San Clemente is gearing up for its annual two-day Ocean Festival Saturday and Sunday, a series of water sports competitions that is expected to draw tens of thousands in this, its 37th year.

"The attendance is around 60,000, and we have over 250 volunteers to help from the community," said festival director Peggy Vance.

This year, the events will include a two-man rescue relay race for lifeguards; stand-up paddleboarding championships; a kids' "Groms Rule" surf competition sponsored by Rip Curl; fishing derbies and clinics by Dana Wharf Sportfishing; and a Saturday Dolphin Dash beach run, among other events, Vance said.

Also at the festival centered at the base of the San Clemente Pier will be a sand sculpting contest; music by Miller Time Boogie, Ugly Paint and Rock the Autism; and a beach cleanup Sunday organized by Ocean Minded.

Offsite parking at San Clemente High School will be available both days with a shuttle starting at 6:30 a.m.

Since 1981, the festival has been billed as "the greatest show on surf," according to the festival website.
