Sports Shorts: Tritons Looking for Reversal of Fortunes Against Mater Dei

Entering Friday's football game like it did last season's, undefeated San Clemente hopes to make statement with victory over winless Monarchs. Plus, cross-country results, boys water polo and girls volleyball tournament previews.

Can you say, deja vu?

Amazingly, the scenario headed into Friday’s nonleague football showdown between San Clemente High and Mater Dei, which will be played at Santa Ana Stadium, beginning at 7:30 p.m., is almost exactly the same as last season, when the undefeated Tritons played host to the winless Monarchs.

That game didn’t turn out so well for San Clemente, which suffered a 42-14 defeat. Friday is the Tritons’ chance for retribution and to make a statement that they truly belong in any discussion of the Southland’s elite teams.

San Clemente (3-0), , has rolled to its three victories -- , and -- behind the passing of Utah-bound Travis Wilson and the running of Mike Elespuru. The Tritons are averaging 45.3 points and giving up only 7.6. This is all the more impressive when one considers the .

Wilson is completing passes at a 63 percent clip, averaging 161 yards a game with six touchdowns and only one interception. He is also averaging seven yards in 20 carries. Elespuru has rushed for 391 yards and five touchdowns.

Mater Dei (0-2), the consensus best two-loss team in the Southland, has suffered tough defeats at the hands of two perennial football powers -- 26-22 to Carson and 28-20 to Corona Centennial -- but the outcome of neither game was decided until its final seconds.

The Monarchs, mired among the “others” in the Pac-5 poll, are led by senior running back Freddie Mora, who is averaging better than five yards per carry, and junior quarterback Ryan McMahon, who has thrown for 300 yards but isn't nearly as mobile as Wilson, having lost 68 yards on the ground.

Last season’s victory over the Tritons turned around the Monarchs’ season. It proved to be the first of five consecutive victories for the team, which finished third in the Trinity League but reached the Pac-5 semifinals with playoff victories over Long Beach Poly and Tesoro.
