Tritons' Darnold, Strange Named to Volleyball All-America Watch List

San Clemente's outside hitter/right side and setter are among eight local athletes and 646 from 38 states to receive preseason honors by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.

San Clemente's Franki Darnold and Alexa Strange, a 5-11 outside hitter/right side and 5-10 setter, respectively, are two of eight local players among 646 from 38 states selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.'s Under Armour All-America Watch List for the 2011-12 season.

Darnold, who has committed to Rhode Island, plays club for Saddleback Valley VBC and Strange, a Colorado commit, for Coast VBC.

Other area players on the watch list include Allison Palmer, 5-9, S/L (Laguna Beach/Laguna Beach VBC);  JoJo Schnabl, 5-9, S (Los Alamitos/Mizuno Long Beach); Jaylen Villanueva, 5-8, RS/S (Los Alamitos/Mizuno Long Beach); Cinnamon Sary, 5-11, S (Newport Harbor/Orange County VBC); Emily Moore, 5-9, S (St. Margaret's, T-Street) and Ali Robinson, 5-10, MB (St. Margaret's).

In November, the AVCA will name a 24-player All-America first team and a 24-player second team. Members of the first team will be invited to play in the Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match & Skills Competition on Dec. 16 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
