July 4 in SC: Weather, Beach Safety Tips

Independence Day will start out cloudy in San Clemente, gradually becoming mostly sunny; swimmers are advised to watch for rip currents.

Independence Day is shaping up to be a mild holiday with gentle waves, but lifeguards advise swimmers to watch out for rip currents.

"We'll be fully staffed for the Fourth of July," said San Clemente Marine Safety Lt. Rod Mellott. "Waves will be 1 to 3 [feet], so it'll be green-flag conditions. We have some fixed rip currents; they pull a little harder when the tide is going out. Eighty percent of our rescues come out of rip currents."

Mellott advised beachgoers, especially visitors with less ocean experience, to check in with the nearby lifeguard once they get to the beach to find out where the water hazards are.
