Hunger Walk Marches Into San Clemente

The 24th annual event brought Avenida Del Mar to life Sunday, raising funds for Family Assistance Ministries.

Bright yellow T-shirts and women sporting halos dotted Avenida Del Mar on Sunday as hundreds of people joined the 24th annual South County Hunger Walk.

Sponsored by Family Assistance Ministries, the event also included live music and free massages on the lawn.

Perhaps the most noticeable walkers were the Beach Angels, a group of 35 women who donate time and money to local charities. They wore angel wings and halos over their Hunger Walk shirts. Beach Angel Bonnie Broshahan said the event was a fun way to raise awareness and funds for people in need.

The Hunger Walk began at the Community Center and looped up and around Del Mar. Informational signs lined the 2-mile path, promoting Family Assistance Ministries and its outreach efforts.

A pre-walk stretch and warmup was led by the San Clemente Dance Team and the San Clemente High School Tritonettes.

The walk culminated , in which local merchants donated part of their sales toward the event.

Mary Gray Perdue, executive director of Family Assistance Ministries, said she was blown away by the level of community participation.

“We are working with an amazing group and it’s great to watch the event come together bigger and better than before,” Perdue said.

Perdue is already making plans for next year’s Hunger Walk, hoping to incorporate more local businesses by inviting them to host booths during the event.
