Marrow Matchmaker Event Draws 700

Festival aims to help 23-year-old leukemia victim.

Lyndsey Harhay, 23, is looking for a match. Diagnosed with leukemia in January, she needs a bone-marrow transplant to continue on her path to recovery. On Saturday, more than 700 people turned out for a marrow match hunt.

"She is my next-door neighbor's niece," said Sharon Giger, a volunteer at the festival. "Their family is one of the most generous and loving families I know of. To be able to give the gift of life is one of the greatest gifts ever."

Harhay's father was a member of the Orange County Fire Authority and her grandfather served in the Marines. The family has a tradition of giving to the community.

"Her family has already given a lot," said Giger. "It's amazing to see everyone out here today."

The family is still looking for more donations in order to find a match.

"It costs us $100 per a person for a test kit and Team Lyndsey has raised over $7,000," said Shelley Baker, senior account executive for the National Marrow Donor Program. "The more voices we have, the more we can help. If you'd like to help you can always contact me."
