San Clemente Rotary Swings its Way into Spring

Organizer say about 200 people attended the 20th annual Big Band/Swing Night.

It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing — luckily, they had plenty of swing at the San Clemente Community Center on Saturday.

The San Clemente Rotary Club celebrated its annual Big Band/Swing Night for the 20th year in a row.

On June 2, the center transformed into a 1940’s club, complete with dancers wearing zoot suits, feather boas and sequins.

“This is one of our major fundraisers for the San Clemente Rotary,” said John Ezell, event chairman. “The demographic that appreciates this era is shrinking, and we hope to reach out to broader spectrum of the dance community.”

The net proceeds from the evening will go to high school scholarships and local charities in San Clemente.

“The entire community is very generous in their donations,” said Maggie Ezell, club member and John Ezell’s wife. “We support almost anything that is local.”

The Mike Henebry Orchestra, a 14-piece big band played classic tunes, and San Clemente’s Carbonara’s Trattoria brought the food.

Organizers estimate about 200 people attended the event.

“We’re delighted to have this music and event again for its twentieth year,” said Lee Van Slyke, club president-elect.
