The Cousineaus Are out for Blood

The Be a Hero, Become a Donor charity run by a local family aims to be the main supplier for blood units in San Clemente.

You can donate a pint of blood every 56 days, and that just may mean life or death to someone in an emergency.

Gina Cousineau and her family's Be a Hero, Become a Donor charity is working on becoming the central agency for collecting blood in San Clemente. Last year, the Cousineaus--including San Clemente High School student Derek Cousineau, the president of the BAHBAD club at the school--collected about 450 units.

in San Clemente uses about 1,500 units per year, so that means BAHBAD collected about 30 percent of all the blood used at the hospital last year.

"We have 92 units this year, and we expect to have about 150 after today," Gina Cousineau said at the group's blood drive Saturday in SCHS parking lot. "But we're not done."

She said the goal is to hold a blood drive every couple months.

"The people of San Clemente, if you give them an opportunity to help, they really step up," Gina Cousineau said.

We collected 82 units of blood yesterday, meaning 100 plus people came out to donate. This way exceeded my expectations of what we could do as a community and out goal now is to host a blood drive every 56 plus days, that is when we are eligible again, and we part of giving directly to our patients in need in SC. We will be at SCHS again on Saturday, March 24, from 9am-2pm for Go Green event, of course providing the "ultimate in recycling" with blood drive and marrow registry, but also hoping to work with any groups in town who want to teach our community how to lessen their carbon footprint. Please contact Gina Cousineau if you want to be part of this event, 949/842-9975 or ginac@bahbad.org

Congrats Gina! Glad the drive was a success. My wife Laura Lee came out to donate in the afternoon.
