I still use wampum, Beth, at the Indian Reservation to buy cigarettes. No cards, no taxes, no bigRead More brother.

I own a small business in Woodridge IL. The amount of credit card fraud has here has increased tenRead More fold over last year. I have to tell you that the card owner doesn't get burned, the card issuer don't either, nor does the company you hire to process and approve the cards. It's the local merchant where the card was used. Online ordering is the worst. The big banks say you didn't swipe a card, so you're liable, even though it was approved by that same bank at the time of purchase. If this keeps up, I'll have to go backwards in time and shut down online ordering. So much for a cashless society.

I think I will go back to using checks at stores and cash at gas stations. I found a gas station inRead More Eagle Rock that gives a discount for using cash and generally buy my gas there. Not as convenient as using a debit card but I had to cancel my card after using it at Target right before Christmas. What a hassle.

When taxes are imposed on various industries then to stay in business the prices increase on theRead More consumer! Obamacare , gas taxes, payroll taxes, tolls, the proposed soda and candy tax , your tobacco tax is 75% of what the product really costs! Commercial Property tax increases! Do you people see what's going on here? This country is being destroyed by the Democrats! It is starting to resemble The a Soviet Union! We should change the name of this country to the USSA!

And all this time i thought it was Pork Barrel spending.

Mark, Your words are absolutely disgusting. Please do not use this comment thread as a vehicle toRead More spew your racist mentality. And for your information, food-borne illnesses come from agriculture, period. All around the world, including in the U.S. Lastly, your hatred for people of colour does not mean that you understand disease, at all. Good luck in life.

Let's see now. LA City starts new trash program which will kill some small business and certainlyRead More result in layoffs. Now SCE going to be laying off 900 plus. Now looking too good there, SoCal.
OldTimer April 16, 2014 at 08:34 am
Well, this is what they call 'progress', folks. Think about it. Not long ago they installed theRead More 'smart meters', right? Well, with 'smart meters' you don't need meter readers, do you? So this has nothing at all to do with democrats or republicans. Let's stop going there. It's about cutting costs with technology. Remember when garbage trucks were 2 man units? I do. Those were back the days when the men manually hoisted the cans and dumped the garbage in the trucks. Well, now the trashing dumping is automated and only a driver is needed. Sorry, folks. That's called 'progress', like it or not. Those layed off garbage men and meter readers need to reinvent themselves and find other work in another industry. But let's not make this political. That's so absurd.

Of course they did; especially after the judgement against the company for the accelerator switches.

When the heck is an all new Tacoma going to come out? It's been the same truck since 2005 or so.
A cockroach infestation shut down the Surfin' Cowboy in Capo Beach last month. Patch file photo.
jim capistrano April 3, 2014 at 02:30 pm
I've also eaten there post-Coconuts...but to allow it to re-open in 1 day after a cockroachRead More infestation is foolhardy. Would you eat in your own kitchen if you found even one cockroach? The Health Department sounds anything but.
Lawrene Bottorf April 5, 2014 at 02:30 pm
I love the OG burger too...
jim capistrano April 7, 2014 at 10:35 am
...with or without insects? This also brings up the subject of the OC Health departmentRead More ratings...Los Angeles County has large signs that read "A", "B" or a big fat "C" rating....OC has tiny little signs that all look the same. Who's protecting who or what?...

San Clemente is just not the same since Talega, and now this? I never wanted to see the day SC wouldRead More have an outlet mall on the bluff. I'm glad I've moved. SC you've changed and it's not for the better.

Funny how our city and state "leaders" are still allowing big housing developments, whenRead More everyone knows how terrible overcrowding and traffic is already. But they just keep building. Not only is it irresponsible, but it's un-managed growth which makes our quality of life suffer even more. When will they ever get it? It's too crowded here already. Enough is enough! (At least until they build a subway) from here to LA, and SD. Adding a freeway lane, or building toll roads just doesn't work.
Richard April 4, 2014 at 02:26 pm
You cannot deprive a property owner of their right to develop land zoned for residential/commercialRead More development as long as there is proper mitigation to the environmental impacts you are concerned with. If you have a problem with the development, you can bid on the property and keep it undeveloped.

The public did not cause this incident. SCE made a huge mistake and they should pay for what theyRead More caused. They did not have to increase the size of steam generators but they did it on their own. It never made sense to change design on such a complicated system.
andy fischer March 28, 2014 at 07:41 am
Not sure if it makes much difference. "They" (SCE) isn't just a bunch if big fat guysRead More sitting around smoking cigars and drinking brandy. "They" is for the most part us. If "they" pay, somehow, we'll pay.
Mike Syi March 28, 2014 at 08:01 pm
When SCE management decided to upgrade the steam generators they assumed the risk not the public.Read More They should have stayed with the original design when worked great for many years. SCE has to be help accountable for their actions. The people who own SCE stock will pay not the ratepayers.

@ MFriedrich; I would hope that Most McD franchisees would not be so immoral as to rob theirRead More employees like these ones did. I am sure that the majority of the Franchisees abhor the kind of publicity that this has generated. And besides, if they are ethical and follow the law, they have nothing to worry about. I understand your point about "oversteering" but the other side of the coin is that this behavior would continue and perhaps even spread if not dealt with, swiftly and surely. This was absolutely the best, and probably the only, action to make sure this illegal behavior did not continue. And now McD corporate will make sure that it does not continue. Those employers who currently offer OT hours and pay to their employees will continue to do so...they have done nothing wrong. They are most likely as irritated by these franchisees/managers actions and immoral behavior as we are. Like I said, no one wants this kind of publicity!

Pay these people what they have coming to them. They deserve the overtime pay and not the shaft. TheRead More prices may go up and maybe the top of the organization may have a pay cut, but don't take the money from the people that need it the most. I do not understand the greed of some people. So you have to pay an additional $.50 for your Big Mack. What kind of greedy (bad word) would be so stingy to keep these people from getting paid. Shame on all of you that are against this!
andy k. liberman March 17, 2014 at 04:09 pm
...we should get $.50 NOT to eat a "Big Mac"

Thankfully there are plenty of 'non politically' motivated restaurants that serve great MexicanRead More food. Somehow I don't think Chipolte will be missed by many.
jeff s March 6, 2014 at 06:38 am
Why is there a story on guacamole here? Our city is not an agriculturally based demographic. So weRead More have a small restaurant that will stop serving this stuff. So what.. Better to do a story on why small businesses struggle here and why the heck we have so many empty storefront buildings along camino real ...could it be absurd rent costs? Likely..
Craig Neil March 25, 2014 at 07:54 am
Are you kidding me they charge $2 for a small scoop of low-grade non-organic guacamole. You wouldRead More think that would bring them as high margin as their low grade meat.

keyplayer, I think you dad was talking about global warming. Europe spent a fortune trying toRead More switch to solar. You will find they are now rushing back to traditional sources of power to save their economies. Renewables sound great and someday might be the answer, but right now they are proving to be inadequate to power modern civilization. When effective alternate sources of power are developed, it will not take mandates to get people on board. Until then, only government mandates keep solar in business.
jeff s March 6, 2014 at 06:43 am
Geez global warming and cooling are cyclical natural cycles.. Tell the wooly mammoth 10,000 yearsRead More ago that the ice age (most recent one) was the result of pesky cavemen.. Sure..
