City Hikes Some Fees for Fields, Pool

Admission to new aquatic center rises. Sports field rental costs also climb, except for local leagues with partnership agreements.

Fees for using San Clemente's new aquatic center and sports fields were revamped Tuesday by the City Council. The fees will be higher for organizations that use them occasionally -- $250 per hour at the Vist Hermosa Sports Park -- but stay the same for local Little League, youth soccer, softball and football leagues that have individual partnership agreements in which the groups pay a reduced fee. Daily fees for the new pool at the Vista Hermosa Sports Park will rise as follows: $300 Councilmen Bob Baker and Tim Brown said the daily pool fees should be lower, which prompted them to vote against the increases, but they said they agreed with the other fees. Recreation Manager Pam Passow said setting fees is an art, not a science, and the …

Nonprofit Aims to Detect Heart Problems in SC

Saturday heart screenings offered for $85.

Ryan O'Hare thought he was a perfectly heathy teen until he was diagnosed with Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome because of a heart screening offered to athletes at St. Margaret's Episcopal School. After the screening by Heartfelt Cardiac Project, a Laguna Beach-based charity, O'Hare spent many months receiving tests and evalutions from various cardiologists, and eventually underwent a procedure to correct the defect in his heart. O'Hare's parents, Mark and Rita O'Hare, said they couldn't stress enough what they learned from the experience. "We feel that every responsible parent and spouse should have their children and loved ones screened," they wrote in a letter now published on the nonprofit's website.  Another heath screening is planned …

PK, this is what a lot of folks don't understand. It's amusing that you somehow believe "nonprofit" means "free" to one and all. This nonprofit doesn't ask its technicians to do screenings for free, nor would you want them to, and the equipment is state-of-the-art, which is the only way to go! Things cost money. Reality bites, doesn't it?   more ›

Baseball: Most Local Teams Must Play Their Way Into Round 1

Some schools, such as El Toro, were solidly in the playoff field. Others have to play wild card games today to get into the playoff bracket. One local school is seeded in the top four.

They're longshots to begin with, and their chances of winning a Southern Section baseball title won't be helped by having to play a wild card game today just to get into the first round of the playoffs. But that's the task facing teams such as JSerra, San Clemente and Capistrano Valley in Division 1 and Trabuco Hills and San Juan Hills in Division 2. For them, the do-or-die playoffs begin today, which will put extra strain on pitching rotations that must win five games to win a title once the first round begins on Thursday for some times and Friday for others. The playoff pairings for the seven divisions were released on Monday by the Southern Section office, and there was only one south Orange County team that was seeded into one of the …

OPINION: Why Saving Trestles Matters

The Surfrider Foundation's Mark Rauscher talks about the importance of preserving Trestles and San Onofre State Beach.

With an estimated six million people around the world watching the recent webcast of the Nike Lowers Pro ASP Prime surf contest daily at Lower Trestles last week, the eyes of the surfing world were literally on Trestles. That is why the proposal by the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) to build a toll road through San Onofre State Beach in northern San Diego County has received so much attention. Because Trestles, in the words of Surfline's Mike Cianciulli, "Is the apex of everything surf in Southern California." Mark Rauscher, Preservation Manager for the Surfrider Foundation has been on the frontlines of the effort to "Save Trestles" for more than seven years. I caught up with him while the Nike Lowers Pro was going on last week. …

Lacrosse: Corona del Mar Ends Foothill's 5-Year Reign

San Clemente also reaches boys' final, while Los Alamitos and CdM will play for the girls' title.

When U.S. Lacrosse Division 1 South crowns a champion on Wednesday at Dana Hills High, the ceremony will have a decidedly different look than it has the past five years. There will be no Foothill. That's because Corona del Mar continued its historic unbeaten season by defeating the five-time defending champion, 7-5, during semifinal play on Saturday. Casey Mix and Michael Keasey had three goals apiece for CdM (22-0), and goalie Michael Ortleib had 13 saves as the Sea Kings turned back the Knights. When the boys' final commences at 7 p.m., Corona del Mar (22-0) will face off against San Clemente (15-6). It will be a big night for CdM, which will also play for the girls' title beginning at 5 p.m. The Tritons were in a battle, but emerged …

Swimming: Capo Valley, Tesoro Sweep League Finals, SMCHS Almost Does

Mater Dei's 10-point victory in the boys' competition denies Santa Margarita Catholic a Trinity League title, though the girls win. Tesoro and Trabuco Hills finish 1-2 in the Sea View.

League finals for boys' and girls' swimming in South Orange County took place Friday, and in two of three cases the championships were swept by the same school. It almost happened in the third league, the Trinity League, but Mater Dei held off Santa Margarita Catholic, 532-522, to prevent a SMCHS sweep at the Santa Margarita aquatic center. Tesoro and Trabuco Hills finished 1-2 in the Sea View League Championships at El Toro High. In its home pool, Capistrano Valley was the easy winner in the South Coast League in both boys' and girls' competition. The Southern Section released its seeding sheets for the section meet that runs May 8-12. Local girls who are seeded No. 1 are: freshman Katie McLaughlin of JSerra in the 100 freestyle and 100 …

Deja Vu: Brazilian Wins Nike Lowers Pro

Gabriel Medina, 18, dominates the competition with powerful surfing and aerial maneuvers. Last year, Brazil's Miguel Pupo snagged the crown.

An 18-year-old Brazilian who dazzled spectators with aerial maneuvers won the Nike Lowers Pro surfing contest Saturday at San Onofre State Park's Lower Trestles. It was the second year in a row a Brazilian took the crown. In 2011, Miguel Pupo won the Association of Surfing Professionals contest. This year, Gabriel Medina put on quite a show throughout the competition’s five-day run, scoring several perfect-10 rides in the 2- to 4-foot glassy surf. The victory earned him $40,000, a 14-karat golden railroad spike as well as coveted point ratings for the Association of Surfing Professionals. “Everyone was surfing really well,” said Medina. “Dane [Reynolds] was my inspiration and Glenn [Hall] surfed really well today.” The final round pitted …

Off The Hook: Fishing Report

Video: Barracuda Show and Giant Lingcod

Plus: Anglers on the Toronado are greeted with gunfire and booms near San Clemente Island.

Southern California anglers continue to experience good rockfishing as they await the beginning of this year's surface fishing season. There have been some encouraging signs south of the border, as well as improving conditions in our local waters. Ensenada Capt. Mike Slater reported good barracuda fishing on Wednesday near Todos Santos Island in Ensenada, Baja California. The toothy critters were being taken on blue and white lures. The captain of the Gamefisher Ensenada also said there were good schools of 15- to 20-pound yellowtail, but very few of the yellowtail were caught. San Diego A few 18- to 25-pound yellowtail were being taken daily around the Coronado Islands and La Jolla. You see a lot more fish than you catch, which is typical…
