Architect: Vista Del Mar Needs $10.5 Mil in Upgrades, Repairs

With Capistrano Unified looking at a total of $822 million in construction costs, here's what's needed at Vista Del Mar Elementary and Middle schools.

Even though the dual campus of Vista Del Mar Elementary and Vista Del Mar Middle School is relatively new, a Capistrano Unified School District has identified $10.5 million in facility needs.

Included in that number are nearly $4 million to replace half of the schools’ portable classrooms with permanent buildings. Another $203,500 in routine maintenance is needed for items the district has postponed in recent years, including paint and the fire alarm.

The numbers come from a report a firm, WLC Architects, the district hired in 2009 to assess modernization needs across the sprawling, 55-campus school district. They were recently revised with 2013 pricing. The district is facing $822 million worth of needs and only has about $44 million on hand to address them.

The updated figures also include $738,000 to buy state-of-the-art technology for students at the Talega-based schools.

Below is an easier-to-read legend for the photo above. New construction, which originally included replacing all the portables, is in peach, remodels in yellow.
